Abstract
364,120. Ships' skins. GOODYEAR, J. W., 4, Devonshire Place, Birkenhead. Oct. 1, 1930, Nos. 29361 and 32569. [Class 113 (ii).] To reduce resistance to propulsion the lap joints of the skin plating below the water line are formed by the insertion of metal members 5 of triangular cross section arranged as shown. The members may be spot or continuously welded to the plates 2 and the edge facing the strake 3 may be recessed to receive and key the filling 20. In alternatives cement is used as an insertion and is reinforced with wire netting 10 which is either anchored to studs 7 welded to the plates 2 or directly welded to the plates. In another form, the metal insertions slightly overlap the adjacent strake and are attached to the hull by countersunk screws.
