Abstract

352,028. Centreless grinding. HORSLEY, H., 3, Rugby Street, London Road, Derby. April 3, 1930, No. 10558. [Class 60.] A work-support for centreless grinding-machines comprises horizontal and vertical members located beneath and at one side of the work and another member hinged above the horizontal member to projections thereon and adapted to be adjustably fixed with reference to the first members to hold the work against both of them. The support d has depending lugs d<1> which enter between side plates b<1>, b<2> of a carrier attached by bolts i to a transversely adjustable part a of the machine. The plates b<1>, b<2> are spaced apart by distance pieces b<4> and are secured by bolts b<3>. The lugs d<1> rest on vertical screws d<2> adjustable within U-shaped brackets c attached by screws c<1> to the side-plates, lock-nuts d<3> being provided on the screws d<2> The support d carries horizontal and vertical hard steel wearing plates e, e<4>, the former being rigidly secured by countersunk screws e<4> and the latter adjustably secured by studs e<2> screwing in the plates and passing through bushes e<3> screwing in the member d. Brackets f on the member d carry pivots f<4> for side plates g to which are attached castings h forming the adjustable work-engaging member. Arcuate slots g<1> in the plates g receive locking bolts f<3> on the brackets f to lock the member h in adjusted position, and a hard steel wearing strip h<5> is attached to the member. The member h maintains the work b in contact with both strips c, e<1>, and prevents it from rising in the grinding throat. Preferably two supports d are provided at the entering side of the grinding wheel a<1> so that one may be swung back against the rear of the brackets f when short work is being ground, and one is provided at the exit side, but according to the Provisional Specification two may be provided at each side. The outer end of the carrier b<1>, b<2> may be supported from the floor and the brackets may be joined by rods which replace one or both of the pivots /4 and locking screws f<3>. For large work such as pipes, the steel wearing strips may be replaced by rotatable rollers. The narrow vertical arrangement of the supports enables the grinding and regulating wheels to be adjusted close together and allows the work to be located easily in a low position with regard to the wheels. The work is supported in the grinding throat by a horizontal rest of ordinary construction which is vertically adjustable, and the lateral member c<1> is preferably arranged at the side of the work nearest the grinding wheel.
