Abstract
216,931. Patterson, J. E., and Scarlett, A. D. March 5, 1923. Lateral-splash guards for the wheels of vehicles, and more particularly those of tramcars, comprising a shield suspended beside the wheel from the axle frame, are characterized in that the shield is adjustable angularly with respect to the wheel about a vertical pivot. As shown, a curved plate or shield a is secured by a bolt and nut to a lug upon an elbow bracket b fixed to the vehicle axle-box. The guards may be provided on both sides of each wheel, or only at the front and rear of the tram-car on the outer sides of the wheels. The guard may be rendered adjustable vertically by making the lug c at the back of the plate adjustable thereon. In modifications the plate is long enough to extend to both sides of the wheel, or to cover a large and a small wheel close together; and a brush or a metal frame covered with waterproof material may be used in place of the plate. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1852/10 and 3709/15.
