Abstract
349,294. Discharge apparatus. REYNOLDS, F., 14, Rosewood Crescent, Walkerville, Newcastle-on-Tyne. May 20, 1930, No. 15468. [Class 39 (i).] An electric discharge device for producing ultra violet rays comprises an outer quartz tube 1, Fig. 1, provided at or towards each end with an electrode, and an inner tube 4 disposed concentrically within the outer tube, one end of the inner tube being open to the atmosphere and fused to the outer tube and its other end being fused to a seal 5 with a leading-in wire 9 which passes through the full length of the inner tube to one of the electrodes 3. The other electrode 2 is connected to a leading-in wire 8 which passes through a seal 7 fused to the tube 1. The upper and lower ends 1a, 1b respectively of the tube 1 may be enlarged relatively to the central portion, to receive the cylindrical metal electrodes 2, 3. The filling may consist of rare gases such as argon or neon, or a mixture thereof, with or without a small quantity of mercury or mercury amalgam. In a modification adapted for liquid electrodes the electrodes 2a, 3a, Fig. 2, consist of mercury or mercury amalgam, the outer tube 1 being extended upwardly within the enlarged portion 1a to form a pocket to receive the liquid for the electrode 2a. The lower portion of the tube 1 is of the same diameter as the main portion and contains the liquid electrode 3a into which the leading-in wire 6 projects.
