Abstract
476,420. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. July 27, 1937, No. 20744. Convention date, Dec. 1, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] The narrow thick-walled envelope of a highpressure metal-vapour discharge lamp has a bore which is greatest in some plane between the ends of the discharge path and tapers thence towards each end. The pressure is greater than 10, and may reach 50, atmospheres. In the form shown in Fig. 1, adapted for operation with the discharge ends in the same horizontal plane, the upper side 2 of the quartz envelope is bulged, while the bottom side 1 is straight, the transverse cross-section being oval with its vertical diameter greatest in the middle. The ends of the tube carrying the electrodes are inclined downwardly and contain globules of mercury. In a vertical discharge lamp, the cross-section may be circular and greatest in the middle, or, as shown in Fig. 3, at a point above the middle, of the discharge. Specification 449,862 is referred to.
