Abstract
514,967. Thermionic valves. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 19, 1938, No. 14987. Convention date, May 22, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] In an electron discharge device of the type comprising a hot cathode, a gas or metal vapour filling and a metal envelope forming the anode, the envelope comprises two metal caps 1, 2, preferably of iron joined to each other in a known vacuum tight manner by a body 3 of ceramic or other insulating material, such as glass, of low heat conductivity. The cap 1 acts as the anode and the cap 2 is connected to one lead of the cathode 4, the other lead passing through an insulating bead 6. The supply of mercury 5 to maintain the vapour pressure is retained in the cup 2 and protected from the temperature of the cathode and anode by one or more slotted, perforated or mesh screens 7 of insulating or conducting material. The cathode may be directly or indirectly heated and may be of the '' Hull " type. If a control grid is used its potential may be supplied by a metal ring 8 seated between two halves of the insulator 3. A gaseous filling such as argon or neon may be provided , in addition to the mercury.
