Abstract
533,107. Exhausting and sealing envelopes of electric lamps &c. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 9, 1939, No. 27489. Convention date, Oct. 7, 1938. [Class 39 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXXVII] The envelope of an electric lamp or other vessel requiring to be sealed is exhausted, or exhausted and gas filled, through an opening in a metal portion thereof, a quantity of readily fusible material such as solder, resin or glass, having first been placed adjacent to the opening. A member through which the vessel is to be exhausted is placed in heat conducting contact with the metal portion of the envelope containing the aperture and after exhaustion with or without subsequent gas-filling through the same aperture, heat is applied to the exhausting member to fuse the sealing material by conduction through the member. Fig. 1 shows an evacuating vessel 11 having a highly heat-conducting bottom 18, adapted to fit a metal thimble in the lamp and provided with a groove 19 communicating with an aperture in the thimble. Alternatively to the groove the exhausting member may have a tubular portion aligned with the aperture and through which the lamp is exhausted at the same time as the vessel 11 is exhausted through the tube 21. The heat may be applied by suitable burners or by an electric heating coil about the exhausting member The invention is also described as applied to a large lamp of the kind described in Specification 512,665 and to a mercury switch of vitreous material sealed externally adjacent to the aperture in a metal portion on one side thereof. The exhausting member is in each case flared and fits a coned apertured surface on the lamp or switch. Specification 514,264 also is referred to.
