Abstract

349,249. Vices. GORDON, W., Union, New Jersey, U.S.A. April 22, 1930, No. 12473. [Class 61 (ii).] A screw-actuated vice, provided with means for the quick release and rapid adjustment of the jaws, is forced into the full open position on releasing a catch by a compresser spring at the rear of the sliding jaw. An adjustable jaw 7 slidable in the fixed jaw 5 has a hollow body 9 to house a buttress-threaded screw 12, the screw is rotatable in bearings 11<1>, 101 and is prevented from endwise movement with respect to the movable jaw by a collar 16. A nut 18 slidable in a vertical aperture 17 bears against the screw 12 under the action of a compression spring 20 but may be released from engagement with the screw by depressing finger-pieces 25<1> such release enabling another compression spring 24 to force the movable jaw into its full-open position. The resiliency of the nut 18 and the formation of the threads allow the screw to slip over the nut in one direction thus providing a means of adjusting the movable jaw prior to the final tightening.
