Abstract

In order to separate more water from the organic matter separated from sewage by fermentation with yeast, the matter is mixed with a powdered carbonaceous material, an acid or alkali, and an oxide, hydroxide, or salt of calcium, and the mixture, while hot, is agitated, and then subjected to filtration in a vacuum filter or filter-press, the caked material obtained being suitable after further drying for use as manure. The organic matter may be that obtained from activated or precipitated sludge by means of yeast. Coke breeze and coal are suitable carbonaceous materials. A mineral acid, such as sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid, or an organic acid, such as oleic acid, may be used. The alkali may comprise caustic soda. Calcium chloride is a suitable lime salt. The organic matter may be heated either before or after the addition of the other materials. The mixture may be agitated by being delivered by an air blast against a plate. The cakes may be dried first in warm air and then exposed to a higher temperature in a vacuum dryer.
