Abstract
343,185. Motor vehicle frames, axles, and driving-gear. MANNING & CO., 208, South La Salle Street, Chicago, U.S.A. Nov. 21, 1929, No. 35641. Convention date, May 31. [Class 79 (iv).] In motor vehicles having front driving and steering wheels and longitudinal side-frame members, the front end of each side-frame member 1 has secured to it an extension to which are clamped upper and lower quarter-elliptic springs 10, the free ends of which are connected to the inclined rearwardly directed ends of the axle. The extensions consist of outer sheet-metal channel members 5 shaped to carry the rear ends of the springs 10, and inner stiffening members 5a both riveted to the front ends of the side frame 11. The ends of the axle 8 are provided with deep forks 26 to which the forked ends 28 of the swivelling axles are pivoted, the wheels being connected as usual for steering by the track-rod 33. The wheel axles are driven from the central differential gear through short shafts 56, universal joints 64, cardan shafts 63 and universal joints 65 concentric with the swivelling axes of the wheels.
