Abstract

490,172. Frame constructions; axle structures. AUTO UNION AKT.-GES., and SIEBLER, O. Sept. 14, 1937, No. 24967. [Class 79 (iv)] In a motor vehicle in which the rear wheels are mounted on a rigid axle extending under the upwardly cranked ends of the longitudinal frame members and are driven by means of transverse articulated shafts from a differential gear mounted on the frame, the crank parts of the frame members lie in the transverse central plane of the rear wheels and are provided with openings for the passage of the transverse shafts. As shown, the road wheels 2 are mounted on a rigid bent axle 3 extending under the upwardly cranked ends 10 of the frame members 1, the articulated driving shafts 8 passing through oval windows 7 in the crank portions lying in the central plane of the wheels. The suspension springs 4 extend under the shafts 8 and axle 3, being directly attached to brackets 6 on the wheel carriers 5, the axle 3 being thereby relieved of strain.
