Abstract
480,969. Motor vehicles. MORRIS COMMERCIAL CARS, Ltd:, and ROSE, P. G. April 15; 1937, No. 26147/36. [Classes 79 (ii), 79 (iv), and 79 (v)] A motor vehicle is provided with geardriven axle-shafts or half-axles 1 obliquely disposed in plan to the main driving shaft 2 and driven from the latter through auxiliary shafts 3 which are at right-angles to the main shaft and are supported by a casing surrounding the main shaft, angular swinging movement of the axle shafts being permitted by a relative rolling action between co-operating gears 4, 5 on the axle-shafts and the auxiliary shafts. The steering wheels may be similarly mounted, and all the wheels may be steered and driven, similar parts being, used for both front and rear axle units. In the construction shown applied to a pair of steering and driving wheels the main shaft 2 is housed in a central tubular frame member 6 provided with projections 7 enclosing the shafts 3 and forming trunnions for half-axle casings 8 enclosing the axleshafts 1. The outer ends of the casings 8 terminate in hollow hemispherical portions 9 fitting over corresponding parts 10 of sleeves mounted on the road wheels, the parts 9, 10 being' connected together by steering pivot pins 11. The half-axle shafts 1 drive the road wheel spindles 16 through bevel gears 15, idle wheels 12 rotatably mounted on the pivots 11, and gears 13 on the spindles 16.
