Abstract
Di- and poly-halogenated hydrocarbons are produced by reacting upon monohydric aliphatic alcohols with a sulphur or phosphorus halide or oxyhalide with or without free halogen. The reaction may be effected in a body of the desired product or of an inert diluent such as carbon tetrachloride, and pressure may be employed. The sulphur or phosphorus compound used may be prepared in the reaction apparatus. In an example, methyl alcohol, methylene chloride and sulphur chloride (S2Cl2) are placed in a pressure vessel and heated to 60-100 DEG C., with agitation, and chlorine is introduced, yielding methylene chloride. By varying the proportions chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, and other derivatives may be obtained. Other alcohols such as ethyl alcohol, and other halogens and halogen compounds such as bromine and the corresponding bromine compounds may be employed for the production of other halogenated hydrocarbons.
