Abstract

Aliphatic fluorine compounds are obtained by reacting an aliphatic compound in which at least one carbon atom carries at least two halogen atoms selected from F and Cl, at least one being Cl, with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of chlorine and arsenic fluoride and/or chloride, at elevated temperature Preferred reaction temperatures are 80 DEG -250 DEG C. under pressure. The arsenic halide may be produced in situ by adding the arsenic as the triiodide or as a metal arsenide. Procedures are described for conducting the process continuously. Examples fluorinate (1) CHCl3 to CHF2Cl, CHF3 and CHFCl2; (2) C2HCl5 to CFCl2.CHCl2\t and CF2Cl.CHCl2; and (3) C2Cl6 to CF2Cl.CF2Cl, CF2Cl.CFCl2 and CFCl2.CFCl2. Other reactions and starting materials are specified.
