Abstract
Organoboron compounds, containing at least one boron-carbon linkage, are prepared by reacting a boron halide (as hereinafter defined) with an alkali metal hydride and an olefinic or cyclic olefinic compound in the presence of an organic amine and of an organic boron or organic metallic compound capable of activating the alkali metal hydride. The term boron halide is defined as meaning any compound in which at least one chlorine, bromine or iodine atom is bound to a boron atom, examples being boron trichloride, diboron tetrachloride, alkyl boron halides or alkoxyboron halides. The alkali metal hydride is introduced in an inert dispersant and must be first transformed into an active soluble form. Suitable activators are the organic compounds of boron, aluminium or gallium, particularly the alkyls, alkyl hydrides and alcoholates thereof, and the presence of only 0.2% of these compounds, based on the alkali metal hydride, is sufficient, but 5 to 30% is preferred. If other organometallic compounds are employed, they will react with the boron halide to form boro-organic compounds. The organic amine used is preferably a tertiary amine such as trialkylamines, morpholine or piperidine. The reaction may be effected at temperatures up to 220 DEG C. in the presence of inert solvents, and at slightly elevated pressure. Specification 830,768 is referred to.
