Abstract
In a process for the manufacture of carbon tetrachloride methane is reacted in a first stage with an excess of chlorine at a temperature in the range from 0 to 400 DEG C. under the action of light and the reaction is completed by adding further portions of methane to the reacted mixture in one or more subsequent stages also under the action of light at a temperature from 0 to 400 DEG C., the light having a wavelength below 4,500 DEG A. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprising a series of reactors and coolers is described with reference to a drawing (not shown). Mercury vapour lamps are employed as lightsources. Examples are furnished. Small amounts of residual chlorine in the products are removed by passing the products through heated active carbon. Tetra chlorethylene, chloroform and methane are present in small proportions in the products.
