Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0844604/IV(b)/1> where each of Ma and Mb is a group-CRRc-or -CRRc-CRRcin which R and Rc are hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, alkyl, or halogenoalkyl; where Ra is hydrogen, fluorine, or alkyl; where Rb is hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, alkyl or halogenoalkyl; where Y is bromine or iodine; and where, when Y is iodine X is fluorine, chlorine, bromine, alkyl or halogeno-alkyl, and when Y is bromine, X is chlorine or bromine; and a process for the manufacture thereof by reacting a cyclic olefin having the general formula: <FORM:0844604/IV(b)/2> with a halogen substituted alkane RbCFXY. The invention also comprises a process for the preparation of compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0844604/IV(b)/3> where Mc and Md are each a group -CRfRg-or-CRfRg-CRfRg-; and where Rd is fluorine chlorine or polyfluoroalkyl; Re, Rf, Rg, are fluorine or polyfluoroalkyl; X1 is chlorine or bromine; X is fluorine, chlorine, bromine, alkyl, or halogeno alkyl, wherein a cycloalkane of the general formula: <FORM:0844604/IV(b)/4> is reacted with a halogen X12; a process for the preparation of compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0844604/IV(b)/5> by replacing by H, preferably with lithium aluminium hydride, the Z atom in a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0844604/IV(b)/6> where Mc, Md, Rd, Re, Rf are a defined above and Z is bromine or iodine; and a process for the preparation of compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0844604/IV(b)/7> which comprises replacing by H the Z atom in a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0844604/IV(b)/8> to produce a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0844604/IV(b)/9> and subsequently dehydrohalogenating the last named compound where Mc, Mdd Re, Rf and X are as defined above, Z is bromine or iodine with the proviso that when Z is bromine X is chlorine or bromine and Z1 is fluorine or chlorine; the last process may be combined with a further step, whereby the product is halogenated with a halogen X12 to produce a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0844604/IV(b)/100> It is also disclosed that certain of the cycloolefins may be oxidised accodring to the reactions. <FORM:0844604/IV(b)/111> Specification 774,103 is referred to.
