Manures.-Sodium phosphate is treated with ammonia, carbon dioxide and water to yield ammonium phosphate, suitable for use as fertilizer, and sodium bicarbonate. A fertilizer is also obtained when a mixture of a sodium salt of phosphoric acid and potassium chloride, which has been allowed to react, yielding potassium phosphate or sodium potassium phosphate and sodium chloride with either or both of the original ingredients is treated with ammonia, carbon dioxide and water, so that the sodium in the salts of the mixture is replaced by ammonia and sodium bicarbonate separated. The product contains ammonium and potassium phosphates, or ammonium-potassium phosphate, with ammonium chloride, and the latter may be separated. The initial materials used may contain nitrates in which case the reactions described in Specification 331,451 will result and the products include ammonium and potassium nitrates. The sodium phosphate may be prepared by treating monocalcium phosphate, obtained by treating natural phosphate with sulphuric acid, with the sodium bicarbonate produced in the process or carbonate prepared therefrom.
