Baffles; firebridges.-In a boiler furnace, the firebridge A is built to the top of the furnace flue C as a perforated barrier of short hollow blocks or pipes a, a barrier D of similar construction is erected nearly up to the top of the flue behind the bridge, and similar structures F' are erected at intervals in the bottom flue under the boiler shell. The, space E between the two structures A and D forms a combustion chamber to which air may be admitted through an opening in the bridge below the level of the firebars B. The hollow blocks or pipes a may be circular, rectangular, or have concave sides, and may be of any refractory material. The barrier D may be built of larger or longer blocks, and may be divided into four or more sections of perforated barriers.
