[Class 51 (i).] A regenerator comprises checkerwork chambers 13, 14, 15 connected in series to form distinct passes for the gases, filler bricks 21, 22 being inserted in the passages formed by the checkerwork in certain of the chambers to reduce loss of velocity of gas flow in a direction away from the furnace, the cross-sectional area of the passages differing from chamber to chamber. Figs. 1 and 2 show a horizontal regenerator connected with the furnace by a duct 11, the uppermost chamber 13 having checkerwork 16 without filler bricks, the next chamber 14 having staggered bar-shaped filler bricks 21 and the lowermost chamber 15 having cross-shaped filler bricks 22. Clean-out doors 19 are provided in the side wall of the regenerator. Fig. 3 shows the application to a vertical flow regenerator the waste gases passing downwardly through the first checkerwok chamber 28 which has no filler bricks in the passages, then upwardly through a flue 30 and downwardly through the second chamber 32, the checkerwork of which has filler bricks 37. Recesses 35 in the ends of the bricks form lateral flow passages. Instead of the octagonal checker bricks with a square passage as shown square bricks may be used.
