Abstract
306,980. Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd., Rose, P. G., and Hamill, W. W. Oct. 29, 1927. Universal joints of the type employing a textile, rubber, &c. ring l bolted to arms on the shaft ends. The bolts j also engage spider-like parts b, b<1> which, at the shaft-line, provide a ball and cylinder constraint e, c; the said spiders in the vicinity of the bolts, and also the complementary washers n, are serrated to grip the ring and the outer edges of the spiders are flared to avoid damage to the ring in use. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the spider at a bolt-hole, showing straight or sinuous radial projections k and flared edges m. The serrations may. be circumferential, oblique, arcuate, triangular, circular, or of arrow-head form, and may be shallow, so that they can be milled. The holes in the ring may be slightly smaller than the bolts and the projections on the spider and washers may be so placed that when the bolts are tightened the material of the ring is compressed about the bolts. The serrations on the washers may be omitted. Springs may be placed under the bolt heads to provide for wear of the ring.
