Connecting uppers to insoles and soles. - In a shoe of the kind having an outturned upper, the sole a, or the upper layer of a multi-ply sole, is split at its edge to form a flange g which is outside the tread area of the foot and is of considerable length to provide a water-tight joint. The upper d is lasted into the angle between the turned-up flange and sole, and its out-turned edge d' is secured by stitching c. The flange is tapered and may extend completely round the sole, or round the waist and forepart only. In a modification, the flange is formed by the skived edge of a large insole which is secured to the outsole by stitching or cement. In another modification, the flange is formed by cutting a groove at the edge of the sole and sewing in it a separate skived strip of leather.
