Abstract

410,772. Boots &c. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, 140, Federal Street, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Hopkins, N. F. ; Rockland, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Sept. 21, 1932, No. 26208. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1931. [Class 17 (ii).] Connecting uppers to insoles and soles.-The upper is secured in lasted relation to an insole by inseam stitches each having only a single thread lying on the overlasted margin portion of the upper close to the edge of the outsole, and the edge of the upper material is trimmed flush with the bottom of the insole, and the outer sole is secured by cement, preferably a cellulose derivative cement. An insole of the channelled form shown in Fig. 1 or Fig. 7 is preferably employed and the shoe upper is lasted at the sides, e.g. by the machine described in Specification 283,978, [Class 17 (i)], employing staples and at the toe and heel ends in a bed-lasting machine. The upper is then stitched through the lip of the insole around the shank and forepart from breast line to breast line by chain or lock stitching leaving a single thread only on the margin of the upper the excess material of which is then trimmed off, as shown in Fig. 12. The lip 28, Fig. 1, of the insole may be cemented down or left loose to increase the flexibility. After the levelling operation, the surface of the insole adjacent the upper and the edge face of the shoe upper may be lightly buffed as distinct from the usual roughening operation employed in cement sole attaching processes, or this may be omitted, pyroxlin cement is applied to the margin of the upper inside the line of stitches and the margin of the insole, and also to the margin of the sole without extending to the extreme edge thereof and the sole attached, e.g. as in the machine described in Specification 339,739, [Class 17 (i)]. Specifications 210,603, [Class 17 (ii)], and 399,525 also are referred to.
