Abstract
304,151. Schieferstein, G. H. Jan. 14, 1928, [Convention date]. Change - speed gearing comprises an unbalanced weight 4, Fig. 1, rotated from a flexible driving- shaft 1 inside a friction drum 2. The drum 2 is caused by centrifugal action to wobble round inside a resilient track 5 secured to a fixed wheel 6. The drum 2 transmits a reduced speed through an Oldham-type coupling 8 to a shaft 10, which speed varies automatically with the load. The weight 4 is adjustable, and the amplitude of the movement of drum 2 into the resilient track 5 varies automatically. The track 5 may alternatively be secured to the drum 2 and run with deformation inside wheel 6. Alternatively, the shaft 10 may be held and the wheel 6 driven. In such an application in which the wheel 6 is the road wheel of a tractor, the impulses of the weight 4 towards the ground are stated to increase the grip of the wheel, and therefore the tractor force. A suitable form of Oldham-type coupling connecting the drum 2 to a disc 9 on the shaft 10 is shown in Fig. 2. A floating torque.-transmitting square 8 slides in one direction between two pairs of guide rollers 14 on the drum 2, and in a perpendicular direction between two like pairs of rollers 15 on the disc 9.
