Coke ovens.-In a coke oven battery the transversely-arranged regenerators 6 are connected to the heating-walls by horizontal conduits 15 running lengthwise of the battery, each conduit communicating with a number of regenerators and with certain of the flues in the corresponding heating-walls. In the battery of six ovens shown the vertical flues 13 are so grouped that, except for the end pairs of flues, four upflow flues alternate with four downflow flues along the whole length of the heating-wall. The regenerator chambers extend half the width of the battery and each can be put into communication with the atmosphere. with a gas main 8, or a waste gas flue 11. The conduits 15 correspond in number with the heating-flues in a wall, and each communicates with a pair of flues in each heating- wall, and each flue is in communication with a pair of conduits. Each regenerator chamber is connected to three of the twelve regenerator chambers. The air, gas, and waste gas connections are so made that an air regenerator is interposed between gas and waste gas regenerators, and a conduit 15 carrying air is similarly situated between conduits carrying gas and waste gas. Expansion of the structure is allowed for by the provision of joints 22 in the brickwork containing the conduits 15. Rich gas supplied through pipes 20 may be used for firing instead of lean gas preheated in the regenerators.
