Abstract

Locking by frictional and positive detents; band brakes.-Brakes for hand propelled vehicles of the kind in which the brake is applied upon release of the handle of the vehicle or relaxation of the pressure thereon are provided with means whereby a partial release of the handle applies a brake of the non-positive type and complete release effects a positive locking of the wheel. A disc g has frictional engagement with a disc i secured to the spokes of the wheelof the vehicle. The frictional grip of the disc g may be adjusted by splitting the disc and by connecting the split parts by a screw device. A compound bolt comprises a part e slidable in a fixed casing k and a part f slidable in the part e springs e<1>, f<1> being disposed respectively between the part f and the part e and between the part e and the casing k. The part f of the bolt is connected by a Bowden cable to a lever pivoted upon the vehicle handle whereby when the handle and the lever are grasped, both of the members e, f of the bolt are retracted. If the lever is partly released the bolt is moved bodily by the spring e<1> to engage one of the notches in the disc g, thereby applying a frictional braking action to the wheel but upon complete release of the lever the member f of the bolt is moved by the spring f<1> to engage a notch in the disc i so as positively to lock the wheel. The bolt is mounted upon the axle by a pair of clips one of which is secured to the casing of the bolt. Instead of the bolt being operated by a lever mounted in the handle, the handle itself may be rotatably or otherwise mounted for this purpose.
