Abstract

Locking by frictional detents.-In a brake for perambulators and like vehicles adapted to engage the wheel periphery one or both of the usual longitudinal members of the undercarriage is or are extended to provide a mounting for the lever or levers of the brake. As shown in Fig. 1, the longitudinals 3 of the undercarriage are extended and twisted into a vertical plane and a lever 8 is pivoted at 7 to each extension. The levers are connected by a transverse bar 9 provided with rubber sleeves 14 for engaging the wheel tyres 1, to brake the wheels. A spring 12 attached to the bar 9 and to a. fixed point acts both to hold the bar in the braking and release positions, stops 15 on the longitudinals 3 limiting the release movement. The bar 9 forms a hand or foot member for operating the brake. In a modification, Fig. 3, levers 8 carrying the bar 9 are pivoted to the front ends of the bars 3 and the link is controlled by a foot-actuated bar 18 connected to the bar 9 and having a notch to engage a stop 20 to hold the brake released. According to the Provisional Specification, there may be a single lever such as 8 cranked to engage the wheel tyre and where duplicate levers are used, these and the trans. verse bar may be formed by bending the ends of a strip or bar upon itself and then at right-angles.
