Abstract

276,332. Violet, M. A. Aug. 17. 1926, [Convention date]. Four - stroke - cycle engines; cylinders, ports of.-To maintain a constant compression of the charge, exhaust gases are drawn into the cylinder at the end of the suction stroke, if a full charge of mixture has not been taken into the cylinder. In addition to'the normal exhaust outlet 11 a terminal exhaust port 14 is provided, which is connected to the main exhaust pipe 12 through an expansion reservoir 6. A cock 5 is placed in the connection to the reservoir and is controlled either with the main engine throttle 4 or independently. At starting or slow running the cock is closed; as the main throttle opens the cock is opened, so that if a light charge of mixture is drawn into the cylinder, the depression existing at the end of the suction stroke will cause the return of some exhaust gases and ensure complete filling of the cylinder. For aeronautical purposes a valve 13 is placed in the pipe from the reservoir; by closing this valve exhaust gases at pressure are held in the reservoir, which exhaust is returned on the next suction stroke to bring the compression pressure to normal. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also states that the main exhaust valve may be reopened at the end of the suction stroke to allow return of exhaust gases for the same purpose, the additional terminal exhaust port being dispensed with; or a sleeve valve control may be used. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
