446,915. Exhaust-silencers. GRIFFITH, A. A., and HELMORE, W., Royal Aircraft Establishment, South Farnborough, Hampshire. Nov. 9, 1934, No. 32258. [Class 7 (ii)] An exhaust - silencer 2 for an aircraft or other internal-combustion engine is provided with a forwardly - pointing valve - controlled air intake 5 whereby cold air may be caused to pass through the silencer by the forward movement of the engine when the engine throttle, to which the valve is coupled, is closed or partly closed. The air intake is controlled by a butterfly valve 6 operated by a lever 9 coupled to the throttle, the lever operating a valve 13 in a silencer cut - out pipe 11 also ; an overriding control may be provided so that the air intake can be opened before the cut-out opens. The air intake and the cut-out may each be controlled by two or more valves spaced apart in series and coupled together, as described in Specification 446,914.
