Abstract
268,271. Pirelli & Co. June 12, 1926. Addition to 255,033. Couplings.-A cable joint of the kind described in the parent application has a readily detachable connection between the cable end and the coupling-member. A set of conductor bars 36 expanded by springs 38 and spring connectors 37 is mounted between flanges 34, 35 on a sleeve 33 surrounding the end 31 of each cable section. The set of bars is compressed as shown before insertion into the coupling member 10 by a cage comprising rings 40, 41 connected together by bars 42. When the cable end is pressed home the ring 40 engaging a projection on the member 10 causes the cage to release the bars 36, the lower ring 41 entering the recesses 43 in the bars. A tube 43 is soldered to the strands 31 of the cable and a spring core 30 extends into the hollow centre of the cable. An insulating tube 12 and paper insulation 25 surround the factory insulation 9 extending as far as the socket in the cover of the box in which the joint is enclosed. The tube 12 and the members 10 and resilient connector 11 are covered with tape before the, box is closed. The junction of the paper tube 25 with the lead sheathing is covered by a divided metal funnel. A similar joint may be employed for coaxial cables.
