262,604. Lumsden Machine Co., Ltd., and Lumsden, W. S. Dec. 23, 1925. Liquid-pressure engines.-The worktable n of a surface grinding machine is reciprocated on a bed p by a fixed hydraulic cylinder q in which is movable a piston r having a rod r<1> extending in opposite directions through brackets n<1> on the table, stops r<2> being provided on the rod to allow slight free movement thereof before the stops contact with the brackets; by this means, the rod is always in tension during operation of the machine. The movement of the table is reversed at the ends of its strokes by means of a valve t in the fluid supply pipe t' from a pump u, the valve being moved by a lever w engaged by dogs n<2> on the table, and one or more throttle valves y, z<1>, and a by-pass z for the cylinder may be employed, whereby the speed of the table may be varied.
