Density separators.-A centrifugal dust separator comprises a fan 1 rotating in a chamber 3 of non-volute form in which the heavy dust-laden air is separated from the relatively dust-free portion; this clean part. passes for discharge into the volute or quasi-volute 4 which is of approximately helical form. It has a smaller diameter than the chamber 3. Skimmers 3<1> are provided in the chamber 3 to take off the heavy dust-laden air so that it may be passed to a settling chamber. In a' modification as shown in Fig. 3, a frustroconical shell 7 converges to the rear of the inipeller, and the dust is conveyed round the edge of the shell, this action being assisted by a conical baffle 7<2>. A shelf 7<1> may surround all or part of the periphery of the shell. In another modification, the first quarter of the volute 4 is of practically constant radius and this merges into a radially diverging portion; a tongue is provided to guide the air in sidewise from the impeller. A small part of the dust-laden air can be brought by a duct from the chamber 3 to the eye of the impeller to be passed again through the separator. A jet of water may impinge on the centre of the impeller to be sprayed on to the shell. Specification 11591/08, [Class 110, Rotary engines &c.], is referred to.
