Abstract

256,033. Douglas Motors, Ltd., and Pullin, C. G. July 11, 1926. Steering - mechanism. - Steering- heads of motorcycles &c. are provided with tapered roller bearings, and with an adjustable frictional device for damping oscillations at high speed. The steering-pillar 2 carries upper and lower sleeves 3, 4, on each of which is a tubular race 5 co-operating with outer races 6 in recesses in lugs on the steering-head 8, tapered rollers 9, which may be mounted in a cage, being interposed between the races. Two or more friction rings 10, 11 are locked to the head by a pin or peg 12 passing freely through holes in the rings, and alternate friction rings 13, 14 are splined to the sleeve 3 of the pillar, the ring 13 being faced on both sides, if desired, with frictional material. A spring washer 17 bears upon the upper friction ring, and the pressure is adjusted by the rider by means of a nut 15.
