Blast furnaces. - In a blast furnace the ore is charged through the shaft 7 and the fuel through the shoot 4 arranged immediately above the tuyeres 3. Offtakes 6 are provided for the withdrawal of part of the g a s e s , the remainder being burnt, by hot air supplied through inlets 5, to dry and preheat the charge in the upper part of the shaft 7. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the fuel shoots 4, which may be mechanically or gravity fed, and the tuyeres 3 delivers into a number of separate chambers 8 arranged round the hearth.
