Reverberatory and metal-heating furnaces.-A furnace in which the front part of the hearth m is combined with a superposed combustion chamber c, is provided with a coal dust firing device a, which directs the upper stream of fuel and air to wards an ash or slag pit g, in which the ash &c. is deposited on reversal of the flame to sweep over the material b to be treated. The ash &c. is removed through openings h, and openings l, d permit manipulation of the blocks b to be treated. In the case of a smelting furnace a recess for the molten material is arranged in the hearth m. Manholes f are provided for repair of the walls e of the combustion chamber.
