Abstract

245,266. Morrison, J. A. Dec. 13, 1924. Paddle-wheels; driving arrangements for paddle-wheels. - A paddle-wheel comprises a number of arms carrying relatively heavy blades which axe freely movable within limits in the plane of rotation and provide automatic feathering. The paddle-wheel shafting is mounted in adjustable supports whereby the wheels may be raised or lowered to the requisite degree of immersion. The wheel comprises a boss 10 Fig. 1, with radial arms 11 to the inner portions 14 of which are pivotally attached heavy blades 12 on short arms 15. The wheels are driven by a crankshaft 29 supported in end plates 23 and a central bearing 30. The plates 23 and bearing 30 are adjustably carried by screw bases 24, 24a cooperating with nuts 26, 27, 26<a> 27<a> on pedestals 25, 25a. The shaft 29 and arms 14 are provided with lubricating channels. Instead of pivotally attaching the blades, the arms 11, Fig. 8, and blades 12 are made integral, and the arms are somewhat flexible. In a modification, the blades 40, Fig. 9, are pivoted at 42 to the flat end 39 of the arms 38, which has abutments 46 for limiting the relative swing of the two parts. The blades are slotted at 44 and have side flanges 47.
