Abstract
308,295. Cantono, E. March 21, 1928, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Paddle - wheels; driving arrangements for paddle-wheels. - In place of or in addition to the propelling means of a ship, the ship is provided with means such as hollow cylinders with or without paddles on the periphery whereby the ship is lifted when in motion. The cylinders may rotate freely or may be driven as by power means. The hull A of the ship is connected to hollow drums B, B1 provided with non-radial paddles and on the supporting arms are vanes C, C1 which receive water thrown back by the paddles and aid in lifting and propelling the ship. When the drums are power driven, engines E, E' transmit the drive through intermediate gearing and if desired a common differential gearing. Between the connecting arms P, P1 are springs F, F<1> which are provided with tension adjustment G. For steering purposes, one element of the differential axle is braked. The floats may be directly mounted on the hull body, the arms P, P1 being dispensed with, and they may be left free to rotate when the engines are employed for driving a screw such as an air screw.
