Abstract

243,168. Supermarine Aviation Works, Ltd., and Mitchell, R. J. Nov. 29, 1924. Propelling.-An engine is detachably mounted outside the hull or fuselage of a flying boat or like aircraft by means of a pyramidal frame detachably secured at its apex to the aircraft and braced by two additional strut members which may be adjustable in length. The Figure shows in plan two engine bearers 13, 14 connected togethe'd and supported on four downwardly convergent struts 15 - - 18 secured by a pin joint at 19 to the front spar of the lower wing of a biplane. A longitudinally disposed V-shaped bracing member 21, 22 connects the end of the pyramidal frame to the rear spar of the wing at 23, and a similar member 25, 26 connects the side of the frame to the front spar at 27. The members 21, 22, 25, 26 may be variable in length to adjust the alignment of the engine.
