Abstract
381,270. Folding aeroplane wings. COMPER AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd., COMPER, N., Hooton Park Aerodrome, and SPENCER, M. H., Halewood, Street Hey Lane, Willaston, both in Wirral, Cheshire. July 29, 1931, No. 21706. [Class 4.] An aeroplane wing is connected at its root to a disc which can turn about a transverse axis on another disc hinged to the machine frame to enable the wing to be turned out of its plane before being folded back against the fuselage, the wing being supported during folding solely by this connection. The fuselage, wing stump or central wing section on each side of the machine has bearings 1, 2 mounted on the framework defining an inclined axis 9 about which the wing can fold so as to be clear of the tail planes. Mounted on these bearings is an annular disc 16, Fig. 3, having flanges 17, 18 against which rests a second disc 21 having flanges 22, 18a. The discs are held together by bolts 25, 26 passing through slots 23, 24 in the disc 21 and carrying rollers 31 bearing on the surface of the disc 21. The wing is secured to the disc 21 between its spars so that after releasing securing bolts on the spar ends it can be swivelled an amount limited by the slots 23, 24 before folding it and the two discs about the axis 9. The amount of swivelling may be adjustable. The part of the wing root behind the front spar is slightly extended to fill a gap in the wing stump during flight, this gap accommodating the thickness of the wing root when folded. The aileron control rod 42 has a universal joint 41 situated at the intersection of the axis 9 and the axis of the discs.
