Abstract
240,425. Bothe, O. Sept. 26, 1924, [Convention date]. Loud-speakers; magnetic instruments; diaphragms.-In a loud-speaker in which a diaphragm 19 arranged to move always parallel to itself carries a coil 21 in the field of a magnet,. the current variations supplied to the coil 21 are superposed upon direct current so that the diaphragm always experiences a pull in one direction, which pull is counterbalanced by the elasticity of the air beneath the diaphragm. The size of the air space and the strength of the direct current are chosen so that the reduction of amplitude due to the damping of the air space falls with increase of frequency in the same degree as the impedance of the coil rises. The central conical portion of the diaphragm is formed of two thicknesses of celluloid or bakelitized paper with a softer layer such as tissue paper between them. The natural frequency of the diaphragm is preferably below the audible range. The wires 22, 23 leading to the coil 21 are secured to the shoes 24, 25 on the underside of the diaphragm rim 17 so that the connections are not disturbed when the diaphragm is removed. Connections are led from the shoes, 24, 25 to terminals 32. The whole instrument may be placed in a casing 33, across the aperture in which is a perforated plate 35.
