Endless band conveyers coacting with fixed surfaces.- Carbonaceous and other material is dried in apparatus B, Fig. 5, comprising superimposed plates b<1> having chain conveyers b<3> to feed the material along the plates and from one plate to the next below. Heating gas enters through an opening b<11> and passes in a divided stream through the drier in contact with the material which is finally discharged through an opening b<10> into the first retort of the series.
