Carbonizing processes and apparatus. - Briquettes are produced from ground coal and a hydrocarbon binding material by passing them through a liquid seal into a distilling zone where they are heated solely by indirect heat, thence into a hardening zone by way of a second liquid seal, and finally into a vertical retort. The moulded masses are fed into baskets 13 on an endless conveyer 14 and carried through a tank 15 containing water into the distilling chamber 9. They are conveyed through this chamber down a passage 16 into the liquid seal and by a second passage 10 into the hardening zone 11 and thence to the retort 20 into which the baskets discharge, the briquettes being received on a conveyer 18 after passing through the retort and returning to the baskets down a shoot 63 whence they are carried through the liquid seal to the point of discharge 48. A furnace supplies hot gases to a header 47 and pipes 46 in the distilling zone, and the gases then pass through pipes 19 into the chamber 11 and by way of a fuel economizer into the centre of the retort 20. Suction fans 64, 66 prevent moisture from the tank 15 entering any of the chambers. Electric lights may be arranged in the chamber 11 to hasten the hardening.
