Abstract
369,271. Carbonizing process and apparatus. TRENT, W. E., 17, Battery Place, New York, U.S.A. Dec. 15, 1930, No. 37817. [Class 55 (i).] Coal, lignite, or mixtures of coal and oil are carbonized during their continuous passage on a conveyer through a chamber in which they are heated by burners above the conveyer while hot gases from the burners are passed through the fuel downwardly, zones of varying temperature being maintained, and the distillates from one zone being passed through another zone. The fuel is fed from a hopper 6 on to a perforated endless band conveyer which moves it through heating zones A .. E and discharges the coke into a hopper 17. The temperatures of the zones vary from 500 to 800‹ C., and heating is effected by burners X over the fuel, the hot combustion products and distillates passing downwards through the charge and being withdrawn from each of the pans 11 .. 15 through outlets 21 leading to condensers. In zone E, water or steam is admitted by pipe 20 for the production of water gas which may be passed by pipe 32 through zone B. A pipe 27 leads gases from zone B to zone D to which ammonia is carried, and hot gases from zone C are passed by pipe 29 into contact with the green fuel in zone A. In a modification, the water gas zone E is not included.
