Coking processes. -Fuel is distilled at low temperature (450‹ to 850' C.) by the accumulated heat derived from periodically heated filling material in rotary drums through which the fuel is passed. Coal is charged from a hopper c into a drier a and delivered from a bunker d into one rotary drum b<1> of a pair which has been previously heated by the hot gases from a furnace f, these hot gases subsequently passing through the drier. The residue is discharged from a chamber e<1> and the distillates withdrawn through an outlet i. The gases used for reheating the drums b<1> between the carbonizing periods serve to burn off any portions of the charge incrusted on the filling material of the drums. The filling material may be constituted by hexagonal tube sections or by refractory tiles in various formations. Specification 217,567 is referred to.
