Abstract

277,955. Urbana Coke Corporation, (Assignees of Parr, S. W., and Layng, T. E.). Sept. 21, 1926, [Convention date]. Retort furnaces; rotary furnaces; charging and discharging; cooling discharged materials. - In carbonizing coal the fuel is fed into a preheating hopper 2 through which pipes 4, traversed by hot waste flue gases from a pipe 5, pass, and is supplied by a screw conveyer 8 rotating in timed relation to a rotary drum 7, to one end of the latter. This drum is enclosed in a heating cham. ber 13 traversed by hot gases entering by a pipe 20 and leaving by the outlet 5, and its angle of inclination may be. varied by a jack 17. The temperature of the drum is maintained constant by a gas burner 21 controlled by a regulating device 23 and a thermo-couple 22 responsive to the temperature in a discharge hopper 19. The speed of rotation of the drum may be automatically controlled from the regulating device 23. The fuel is discharged into a car 24 mounted on a track 25. Each of the metal retorts 26 has at its lower end a hinged perforated plate 33 connected to an operating rod 34. The retorts are enclosed in refractory walls 27 having passages 37 for the entry of gas and passages 38 from which air is admitted by valve-controlled inlets 40, 41 to burn the gas in contact with the retorts. Combustion products escape by a pipe 45 to heat the drum 7. The coke is discharged into a chambed 46 surrounded by air preheating conduits 48 which lead by a pipe 50 to the retort heating chamber. Specification 270,003, [Class 55 (i), Coking &c.], is referred to.
