Abstract
Alkali metal compounds, obtaining from complex silicates. A double silicate is obtained by heating an aluminium silicate such as china clay with an alkali or alkali carbonate in presence of water to boiling temperature and this double silicate is then heated with alkalies or alkaline earths or their carbonates in presence of water in a closed vessel at 3-4 atmospheres or in absence of water at a like temperature to effect its decomposition.ALSO:Aluminium hydroxide is obtained by heating aluminium silicates such as China clay with alkalies or alkaline earths or their carbonates in presence of water in a closed vessel at 3-4 atmospheres pressure or in absence of water to a like temperature. Alternatively the silicate is heated with alkalies or alkaline earths or their carbonates in presence of water to a boiling temperature without pressure so as to obtain a double silicate, and then this is heated with more alkali or alkaline earth or a carbonate thereof in a closed vessel as described above to obtain alumina and an alkali or alkaline earth silicate.
