Abstract

In the production of sodium aluminate solutions from oxides or hydrates of aluminium containing silica by extraction with preferably concentrated caustic soda, solutions free from silica are obtained by adding the requisite amount of the dry slaked hydrates of barium, strontium, or calcium, or the oxides or hydrates of magnesium or zinc prior to or during extraction, the amount of caustic soda needed being correspondingly less. The silica is precipitated principally as a calcium silicate.
