Abstract

Vanillin is prepared by saponifying guaiacyltrichloromethyl carbinol and oxidizing the product. According to the examples, the carbinol is boiled with cupric acetate solution, optionally after previous boiling with water and with introduction of air; the vanillin is extracted with ether or chloroform from the cooled solution. Guaiacyltrichloromethyl carbinol is obtained by condensing guaiacol with chloral hydrate.
