Abstract

New phenanthrene derivatives are obtained by combining octahydrodiphenyl with a p-quinone, unsubstituted on at least one side, or with maleic anhydride, and if desired, oxidizing the phenanthrene derivatives obtained by oxidation in alkaline solution. According to examples, octahydrodiphenyl is heated (1) with a -naphthoquinone to give a dodecahydro-dibenzanthraquinone, which may be oxidized with air in alkaline solution to a decahydrodibenzanthraquinone; (2) with p-benzoquinone; and (3) with maleic anhydride to give a phenanthrene condensation product.
