218,704. Russell, R., and Broomfield, H. March 9, 1923. Compound sheet materials.-Layers of leather, felt, &c. are attached to one another, or to a sheet of rubber, in the manufacture of boots &c., by coating the surfaces to be joined with rubber or like latex, allowing the latex to dry, moistening with a rubber solvent, and pressing the surfaces together. The leather may be roughened or buffed while wet previous to the application of the latex. Leather soles may be built up by this process with an intermediate layer of crepe rubber, or a crepe rubber sole may be made of several layers having insets of leather in the wearing surface. When a sheet of rubber is to be attached to another substance the rubber does not need to be treated with latex but only moistened with solvent.
